USB and peripheral connectors have been revised numerous times. Each manufacturer wants their own proprietary technology to rule all others. USB Type-C is the next connection type slated to become “the standard”.
Most are in favor of a universal connector. Who wouldn’t want one standardized adapter that works with all devices (iPhone, Mac, Surface, and PC)?
The USB type-C connection has the potential for power delivery (100w output), increased transfer speeds (up to 40Gbps), supports 2- 4K monitors off of the same port, and costs less than the Thunderbolt.
Over the next few years, there is potential all other connectors will be phased out and USB Type-C will be the last man standing.
